Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), also called Traditional East Asian Medicine or TEAM, is a form of complementary medicine that dates back several thousand years, starting around the 5th century BCE. TCM uses acupuncture, herbal medicine, and diet/lifestyle changes to help promote good health. “Fuke”, translated as “gynaecology”, was a significant medical specialisation by the time of the Song dynasty (960-1279 CE), with new emphasis on the importance of blood in women and on regulating the menstrual cycle to prevent or cure disease. 

Disease in TCM is viewed in terms of patterns of disharmony, where the body has lost its adaptive ability and this has caused an upset in the harmony, or equilibrium, present in the body. Disease is thus a manifestation of “a pattern of disharmonious relationships” within the body. Therefore, it is not the disease itself that is being treated but the underlying imbalance; by rearranging the pattern of disharmony into one of harmony and balance, the condition itself is treated. This means that your TCM practitioner will look at all your symptoms, not just those that might be related to your endometriosis, to come up with a treatment plan.

Acupuncture

The most common TCM modality used at Sydney Endometriosis is acupuncture. Acupuncture is the insertion of very thin needles into particular parts of the body (called acupuncture points) to help restore health. Usually these needles are left in for about 20-30 minutes, and most people find this to be a relaxing experience – its not like getting a blood test or a tattoo! Depending on your symptom presentation and severity your practitioner may also discuss herbal medicine (either liquid or in granules, like instant coffee) and lifestyle changes as well. 

TCM can help manage the following:

  • Bladder symptoms including pain, increased frequency and urgency
  • Bowel symptoms including bloating
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Mental health including depression and anxiety
